Easter Parade

Posted on 11, April 2014 by Bruce Wilken

11th Apri 2014  Well done to all the children who took part in our Easter competition today.

Mrs Burton told me confidentially that this was the hardest year so far to judge.

Reception celebrated Chinese New Year today by tasting different Chinese foods. They got to try spring rolls, chicken and sweetcorn soup (noodle and sweetcorn soup for the vegetarians), prawn crackers (plain crackers as the vegetarian option) and noodles. The happy faces, satisfied nods and thumbs up coming from the children showed the food tasting was a real success! Shouts of ‘Yummy!’ could be heard down the corridor. Some children even asked for more. Reception even learnt how to say ‘Happy New Year’ in Cantonese, and made their own Chinese paper lanterns to decorate the classroom ready for Chinese New Year.

The William Amory Primary School & Nursery

Year 5 have reached the end of their local history topic covering Stoke-on-Trent. The children have learnt so much throughout the topic and some have even been taking their learning further by visiting local museums and potteries with their own families. Its been great to see the children so involved and as part of the topic the children worked in small groups to create their very own old bottle kilns out of clay. They had to meticulously create each brick, and then stack these in such a way as to create the signature Stoke-on-Trent bottle kiln shape. After the clay bottle kilns had had plenty of time to dry, a group of Year 5 children used the bottle kilns created by their peers to construct 'The Lost City of Stoke-on-Trent'. They painted each bottle kiln in beautiful metallic colours to celebrate their creation and then scoured the school grounds for pieces of rock and foliage to create that 'lost city', derelict aesthetic. We hope you enjoy the photos of our project as much as we do and it is now on display in the foyer.

Year 6 and Year 5 joined together for a 'mini-enterprise' afternoon. They worked in groups to design a tower using limited paper and sellotape. Once their planning was complete, they had 20 mins to work in silence to complete a tall, stable and aesthetically pleasing tower. The activity placed a strong focus on group work and it was interesting to see which groups worked well together and who took on leadership roles. The 20 minutes silence was a challenge for some! Well done children!

Year 3 are making volcanoes as part of their geography topic. They are using the paper mache technique around a plastic bottle to create the structure of the volcano. Once they have finished their volcano models, they will be erupting them during a science lesson as part of an experiment. I can’t wait to see the finished product and how the volcanoes erupt. Well done Year 3! ... See MoreSee Less
